Herald Sun journalist, Christine Retschlag, joined our recent Ocean Swim Week with Ali Day and enjoyed a roller coaster week of emotions. You see, Chris wasn’t an ocean swimmer. She could swim, and had been training hard to prepare for the trip, but she’d never swum 2km in a solid downwind chop, and thus had a habit of trying to swallow the lagoon. As nice as it is, we needed her in the lagoon and not vice versa. The turning point came on the Thursday when she stopped convincing herself that she couldn’t do it, and instead relaxed, stretched and swam through the pack of Bold and Beautiful swimmers from Manly and onto the beach – much to everyone’s surprise and encouragement. She wasn’t racing – we don’t do that – but something clicked and she cruised with the chop like a pro. Out of the water, Chris was outrageously naughty and funny, and I can only imagine the sorts of shenanigans that happen on media famil trips with Chris at the helm. Read her article and see if her roller coaster finished on a high or low.
