Very few destinations in the world offer spectacular snorkelling 30 metres from the beach. The diversity of coral and fish species, the water clarity and temperature, the regular sunlight, and easy access make Lord Howe one of the world’s premier snorkelling experiences. The colours, textures and life forms you see at Neds Beach, Middle Beach and Old Settlement Beach are dazzling. You can swim with big turtles, kingfish, trevally, double-headers and rays only minutes from the beach.
If you’re keen to see bigger fish and brighter coral, then join one of the snorkelling boats and you’ll experience the same dive sites that people come from all over the world to see. Erscotts Hole, Commets Hole, Stephensons Hole and the Horseshoe are all stunning. There are a number of snorkelling boats on the island, and most offer glass-bottom coral viewing and lagoon cruises as well. The guides are experienced, knowledgeable and enthusiastic.
The three ‘boatsheds’ hire snorkelling gear and some hire kayaks and paddle boards. Read the Locals’ Guide to Lord Howe Island to learn more about our best snorkelling spots.
